Street Fighter 6" Surpasses 2 Million Sales in Just Five Weeks

Since its June 2 release, "Street Fighter 6" has been a surefire hit.

Critical reception has been glowing, including my own 89% review of "Street Fighter 6," with players flying in from all over the world, throwing fireballs and swinging their feet recklessly. The fighting game was a huge success, with Capcom revealing that it sold over 2 million copies in five weeks.

This is a good number for the genre, and it appears to be on pace to reach Capcom's goal of 10 million lifetime sales. Incidentally, "Street Fighter 5" sold only about 600,000 units in the first six weeks after its release, falling short of its initial target of 2 million units. It went on to sell about 7 million units over the next seven years, becoming the best-selling home video game console title of all time. Considering that this game was released in much worse shape than "Street Fighter 6," it is no wonder that the latter continues to sell consistently. Another major fighting game franchise, "Mortal Kombat," has sold at least 15 million copies in four years.

Capcom's investment in the SF6 fighting scene will certainly strengthen these numbers. With a total prize pool of $2 million (including $1 million for the grand winner) for the upcoming Capcom Cup, and a more approachable game thanks to the modern control options available in the tournament, it will certainly encourage people to pick up the game and give it a shot.

The first DLC character, Rashid, is also on the way, and three more fighters will be available by early next year. There's plenty to look forward to, and the delicious discounts that will inevitably be applied to the game down the road will give you even greater incentive to pick it up, even if it's just to try out its bizarre yakuza-style single-player mode.
