The Montreal Gazette reports that 22-year-old Yanni "Y4nnOXX" Ouahioune, the perpetrator of the swatting incident that forced the evacuation of Ubisoft Montreal in 2020, was sentenced by a French court to a three-year community sentence (non-custodial) The case is now in the hands of the French court.
The incident occurred in November 2020, when a false call was made to police at Ubisoft Montreal that a hostage was present, leading to a massive day-long police operation. Ultimately, no hostages were found and fortunately no one was injured, but after it was determined that the call was false, Montreal police announced that they would launch an investigation to "get to the bottom of the report."
Ultimately, allegations were directed at Ouahioune, a French national and Rainbow Six Siege player who had been banned from the game several times for cheating and abusing developers and other players. He denied any involvement in the swatting, but was clearly unhappy with Ubisoft: videos on his YouTube channel, which remain today, include a warning to "punish Rainbow Six Siege with cheats from hell" and a rap "Fuck Ubisoft"
"The Court of Justice
"We acknowledge the court's decision," Ubisoft Montreal said in a statement. In this court case, we have made every effort to represent the interests of the employees affected by this fake hostage standoff alert at the Montreal studios. It was important for us to denounce this violent and unacceptable incident."
"Out of concern for the employees affected by this incident, we will refrain from further comment."
Ouahioune's sentence actually spans a total of three separate incidents: in June he pleaded guilty to DDoS attacks against French government agencies and making threats against Minecraft studio Mojang.
