Today, the Steam user rating for Cyberpunk 2077 switched from "generally favorable" to "very favorable".
Marcin Momot, global community director at CD Projekt Red, noted the big moment and thanked fans for "recognizing all the hard work the team has put in over the years since release."
Some might argue that this moment is not that big of a deal. Despite its train-wreck reputation, "Cyberpunk 2077" did quite well on the PC, especially if you had a fairly capable rig. Even when it was first released, i.e., when it was at its worst, its Steam score never dropped below 70%. Not bad for most games, but "Cyberpunk 2077" was not most games.
But, as Momot said, CD Projekt stuck with it, and things slowly turned around: in November 2021, a flood of feedback from people who had purchased the game at half price during Steam's Autumn Sale and new user reviews rose to "very positive" were the first The first evidence of improvement was the increase in new user reviews to "Very Favorable. The overall rating remained "mostly favorable," but the needle moved very slowly as the number of new reviews continued to grow. Last year's "Edgerunners" update, which coincided with the release of the highly rated Netflix show "Edgerunners," fixed some of the niggles that had persisted since launch, such as the lack of a slot for cosmetic armor, and received positive reviews.
As you might be able to tell by checking the Steam page yourself, Cyberpunk 2077 is still listed as "generally well received." If so (and I bring this up because it was for me), it's because of the user review settings: as a way to combat review bombing, Steam allows users to exclude "off-topic reviews" from their ratings of the game. This means that the thousands of negative reviews dropped between February and March 2022, as well as reviews that Valve deemed off-topic, were included in the overall rating, enough to pull it back below 80%. Remove those and you're at the top of the list.
My guess is that unless the Phantom Liberty expansion literally changes the world (the actual real world, not the game world), Cyberpunk 2077's rating will be this high: 95% positive for Steam's highest rating, "Overwhelmingly Positive" positive user reviews, and with all due respect to CD Projekt, that's not going to happen. Still, no matter what CD Projekt says now, there is no doubt that what was one of the ugliest game launches in history has been a stunning turnaround.
