There are no procedurally generated planets in Ubisoft's open-world game "Star Wars": all game worlds are "handmade

Ubisoft's open-world Star Wars game Star Wars Outlaws, announced earlier this year, will no doubt be an interplanetary adventure of considerable scope. However, creative director Julian Gerighty said in a new interview with Edge magazine that the Ubisoft Massive development team aims to keep it "manageable."

"Starfield" will famously have more than 1,000 planets when it arrives in September, and Todd Howard said there will be a great deal of tailor-made content on many of them. As a result, there are many places to visit, but not much to do on most of them.

Outlaws is taking the opposite approach, Gerighty says. The number of planets that can be visited is not yet known, but it appears that all the areas that can be explored will be "handmade" and fleshed out.

"It's a crude analogy, but one planet might be about the size of two zones in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, for example," Gerighty said. "Maybe two or three zones. But it's not a grandiose approach, like 'recreate all of England.'"

This is presumably referring to the regions of "Odyssey," each of which has different level requirements and a variety of unique attractions, although obviously not on a strict scale, as different regions of "Odyssey" have different sizes, goals, and requirements. While not as large as "Starfield," the implication is that "Outlaws" will be a substantial experience.

Similarly, players will not be able to fly freely over planets in "Outlaws": instead, they will explore areas close to orbit, where they may find things like asteroids and abandoned space stations.

"We're really focused on what 'open world' means to the player, which is total freedom of approach," Gerighty said. Frankly, I'm fine with that: I'll take a handful of locations specifically created for my interest and enjoyment over thousands of planets.

[14] The release date for Star Wars Outlaws is currently undetermined, but it is expected to be released sometime in 2024. However, given that this is a Ubisoft game, we wouldn't tattoo that date on our biceps just yet. By the way, "Starfield" is scheduled for release on September 6.
