For an action RPG with five different classes, Diablo 4 makes it difficult to work through multiple characters, especially when it comes to powerful equipment at the end of the game.
Currently, a level 100 Diablo 4 character can only find items under level 100 conditions. However, starting this week in Season 1, the level requirements for Sacred and Ancestral items will be capped, allowing them to be saved for other classes.
First mentioned in an interview with Gamestar and later revealed by Associate Game Director Joe Piepiora on Twitter, Sacred items will be capped at level 60 and Ancestral items at level 80. This means that if you find a particularly good item on your main character at level 100, you can save it for another character without having to repeatedly level up to equip it.
However, it is not yet clear if the new level cap will apply when you imprint a high level Legendary aspect on an item. Right now, if you find a great piece of equipment and put a level 100 aspect on it, the item's required level will be raised to match. If your alt is below level 100, suddenly you can no longer use that item. This is known in the community as a "bricking" item. If this works, the Legendary Aspect bonus would be reduced to match the item's power level, or something similar.
Don't get too excited: the new level cap does not mean that level 20 characters will be able to equip end-game gear; the minimum requirements for Sacred and Ancestral items are 45 and 60 respectively. Instead, the level cap will add new uses for high level items that are essentially unnecessary and will provide an incentive for end-game players to trade loot for other players.
This is a healthy change that simplifies Diablo 4's very complex item system. Extracting, imprinting, or upgrading an item makes it difficult to track what level the item will eventually be. And now endgame characters can be used to procure loot for lower level characters.
The new item level cap will synergize nicely with the new "Scrolls of Amnesia" item from Season 1: "Scrolls of Amnesia" earned in the Season Journey challenge will instantly give skill points and paragon points to free of charge and can be reimbursed. So if you get a great item for your alt and that alt happens to have this new scroll, you can easily resec and build around it. And if Blizzard finally (hopefully) adds build presets, the most troublesome problem in Diablo 4 may finally go away.
Diablo 4's first season launches this Thursday, July 20.
