Logitech acquires desktop controller maker Lupedeck.

Logitech acquires desktop controller maker Lupedeck.

Loupedeck, manufacturer of the Loupedeck Live S and Loupedeck Live desktop consoles, has been acquired by Logitech.

Logitech acquired the company for an undisclosed "insignificant" amount, suggesting that this amount would not significantly impact Logitech's bank account.

Loupedeck makes a device that sits on your desktop and provides multiple shortcuts to your PC and whatever app is running at the time. Primarily used by streamers for quick access to chat, camera, and other streaming functions, Loupedeck has also extended to creative apps such as Adobe's Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

LupeDeck also offers devices for more professional applications such as music production and video editing. Nevertheless, the acquisition announcement is largely focused on the streaming side of Loupedeck's business.

"Loupedeck and Logitech share a commitment to creators and streamers and believe that creativity knows no boundaries, and joining Logitech will allow us to take what we do to the next level and dramatically expand our audience and creative impact on the process exponentially," said Mikko Kesti, CEO of Loupedeck.

Loupedeck will operate "business as usual" for the foreseeable future following the acquisition. While there should be no major changes to Loupedeck's product lineup as a result of the acquisition, the company's further cooperation with Razer will likely come to an end.

Loupedeck and Razer had partnered on the Razer Stream Controller, a Razer badged version of the Loupedeck Live. However, it now seems very unlikely that any further cooperation is possible. I reached out to Razer to see if they had any further comment on what this might mean for the existing Stream Controller lineup and future collaborations.

Update: Razer has made the following comments regarding support for Stream controllers now that Logitech has acquired Loupedeck.

"Logitech's acquisition of Loupedeck will not affect the Razer Stream Controller and Razer Stream Controller X products, which drive the Razer Stream Controller. Access to and support for the Loupedeck software will continue to be provided by Loupedeck."

However, Corsair's streaming subsidiary Elgato is the company most synonymous with this type of device; the Elgato Stream Deck is one of the most popular desktop/streaming consoles today, and Stream Deck + and other devices are very popular among streamers.

Both the Loupedeck Live and Stream Deck + offer similar features to streamers, but in our eyes, the Loupedeck holds the lead in terms of software and plug-in integration. As I said in my review of Loupedeck Live, it is "like Elgato, but in every way.

Nevertheless, when our contributor Reece compared the two streaming controllers head-to-head, it was the Stream Deck + that he ultimately topped following his review of both devices.

It's a close race, although it must be said that the two devices offer slightly different things. Clearly, however, there is serious interest in making this type of PC controller more of a mainstay on the desktop due to interest from key players in the PC scene, and we will probably see more of them in the coming years.
