Diablo" fans sigh at announcement of collaboration with K-POP: "I'm disappointed.

A recent tweet from Diablo General Manager Rod Fergusson left fans in a whirlwind of speculation: posted on May 31, one day before Diablo 4's early access launch, Fergusson's tweet seemed to sneak in a hint that Blizzard had another big trick up its sleeve. It seemed to sneak in a hint that they have another big trick up their sleeve."

"Wondering if they're still teasing #DiabloIV tomorrow night," Fergusson tweeted to Diablo marketing director Daniela Rodriguez, "You guys are really going to be surprised.

Isn't that exciting? Rumors quickly accelerated. Clearly, Ferguson was going to announce the sudden addition of Diablo's Paladin class for the launch of the fourth game. Or, no, wait, maybe he meant to announce that the full game would be released a few days early. Or maybe he was going to announce some glitzy cosmetic thing that would allow us to form another bizarre social hierarchy." Players waited in anticipation.

When it turned out that Ferguson had announced a hot Diablo-themed collaboration between musicians Halsey and Suga (of BTS fame), one can only imagine their disappointment.

Suga and Halsey will be working on a new version of Halsey's song "Lilith," which you may remember she performed at last year's Game Awards. It will be made "for Diablo 4" and released on June 5. You can see part of it in the tweet above. Halsey is dressed as a top-level Scottish Widows.

It's all very exciting and understandable that kids these days are so into K-Pop, but it's not exactly what the existing Diablo 4 community was hoping for. When Ferguson finally made the announcement he had been teasing, players held their breath and let out long, heavy sighs; on Reddit, the reaction to the news was summed up in a post by user Sophie_MacGovern: "Someone take away his social media access." was summed up in a post by user Sophie_MacGovern, "Someone take away his social media access. Another post was "Consider me whelmed" by Parigod.

To be fair to poor Rod, it's not his fault that the incredibly vague and low-energy teasing players on Twitter went into a tizzy, but you didn't have to be a prophet to predict such a reaction. Fans are flocking to news of "Diablo" like piranhas the week of the fourth game's release, and what they want is an announcement about the game itself, not an elaborate array of marketing stunts.

In any case, Blizzard may have gotten what it wanted with this announcement. The Twitter replies to the Halsey/Suga music video tease, which include Korean in their names and have cute pop star profile pictures, no doubt have many people excited. But for the 30+ year old wretches who haunt the Diablo subreddit, the tease might have raised a few better expectations.

Diablo 4 launches next week, June 5 in the Americas and June 6 in the rest of the world, and Blizzard probably won't announce Paladin during this time, as the game's release date is still in the works.
