Frictional Games has launched Steam Workshop support for its foundational horror game, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. "We are well aware (and in awe) of the countless mods and custom stories that have been created over the years. And now we've finally made them available for smooth publication and installation via Steam."
Friction has historically been friendly to mods, making their own HPL engine level-building tools freely available and adding a "Custom Story" option to the main menu of compatible games to allow easy access to user-created campaigns The company has been doing this for years. Previously, mods for Dark Descent could be found primarily on ModDB and NexusMods.
The compatibility of the Steam Workshop will not only provide convenience for players wishing to access Amnesia's custom campaigns, but will also make them easier to discover for mod makers. Of particular interest is the HPL engine's Dark Souls 3 homage "Profaned Capital," which will be released in 2020 and is currently getting renewed attention on Steam.
The Bunker, the latest in the Amnesia series, is just days away from release, and it looks to be something special; PCG staff writer Morgan Park praised The Bunker's open-ended gameplay in an earlier preview, saying, "Like a full-blown immersive sim . approaches the player agency and emergent gameplay of a full-blown immersive sim."
