"You can make your ship look almost anything you want," Bethesda says of Starfield's shipbuilding tools. And in the Starfield Direct stream, there appears to be a universe of possibilities, with several animal-inspired ship builds being shown alongside things like the giant Power Rangers Megazord.
All of these will be possible from the in-game spaceport, which will serve as an area to buy, sell, repair, and upgrade ships. Bethesda has confirmed that there are various ship makers in the game that "bring a unique look and feel to every part of the ship," allowing players to modify the living quarters, dining room, cockpit, and cargo hold to their liking. The living quarters, mess hall, pilothouse, and cargo hold can be modified to one's liking.
This is where the Ship Builder mode comes in, which looks like a fantastic Kerbal screen for chopping and changing the appearance of the ship. In the showcase, we saw several possible parts to choose from, including shield generators, dockers, fuel tanks, drives, weapons, living spaces, cockpits, cargo holds, landing gear, reactors, cowlings (cool looking parts), and engines. Also, apparently all of these parts can be upgraded.
Initially, there may be a limit to the number of crew members that can be crammed onto the ship. The Frontier, the starting point, can only accommodate two people.
As far as the shipbuilder mode is concerned, it seems that speed, mobility, jump range, and cargo space specs are determined here. In other words, how you spec your ship here will almost certainly affect the type of work you can take on elsewhere. This is also where they customize the look of the ship, including the actual components and parts that make up the ship, as well as the final paint job.
Another interesting tidbit of information from Bethesda is that you can secure new ships for your fleet by buying them or taking them from your enemies; while in Starfield, you can choose from several ships anyway you like, so you can play seriously with one ship and or play a little fast and loose with another ship. As Bethesda says, one freighter for cargo missions, one speedy fighter for when you want to moonlight as a Mandalorian, and so on.
"These are huge," Bethesda developers say of the ships during the stream.
But here's where it gets a little otherworldly. Ryan Sears, Bethesda's lead ship artist, says, "With a little creativity, your ship can look like almost anything."
But before you come up with an idea, Jeff Bezos has already built that kind of spaceship, so you might come up with a fresh idea.
