In response to the backlash, BioWare removed the "Mass Effect" statue celebrating Shepard's death in the cold vacuum of space.

Update: After agitating fans with a statue depicting the death of "Mass Effect" trilogy protagonist Shepard, BioWare has "temporarily suspended" sales of the item. All pre-orders will also be cancelled and refunded.

"Earlier today, we announced the sale of our newest Mass Effect Shepard Statue," the BioWare Gear Store announced in a tweet. 'This statue was intended to be part of a series commemorating some of the most important and most moving moments in the series. The statue was intended to be part of a series commemorating some of the important and most moving moments in the series. As a result, we are suspending the sale of the statue until we can share our larger plans with you."

It is a sad day for viewers of the Death Statue, but as the above statement suggests, there is a great possibility that it will return in a slightly more, compelling context.

Here's the original:

BioWare's merchandising team seems to love making statues, and the Dragon Age side of the BioWare Gear store has always been a good place to start, from that snazzy Iron Bull statue from last year to the new tarot card from the Inquisition I had my eye on to the always expensive new resin figures. Apparently the Mass Effect brand is also focusing on the polyresin game, and right now they have a $135 statue of their latest iconic character, Commander Shepard.

"The Mass Effect Shepard's Death Statue depicts the dramatic opening scene of Mass Effect 2: Commander Shepard, thrown out of a collapsed Normandy, hurtles through space to an untimely death. Not a scene I would personally commemorate as a collector's item, but what the hell am I supposed to do?

I am not criticizing you "Mass Effect" fans. It's just that over here we have dramatic statue poses of Inquisition characters, while over here we have Kaidan relaxing in a chair with a beer, Tali relaxing in a chair (without a beer), a replica of the Avenger's gun, a statue of Mako I am now just judging the adjoining area. I am now just adjacently judging and giving you a quizzical glance: ...... No, I don't know who at BioWare is in charge of merchandising for Mass Effect.

Anyway, if you're interested in that sort of thing, there's a Dead Shepherd statue in the BioWare store right now. About 1.5 meter cube; limited to 2,000 pieces; if you're inviting friends over to see DeadShep, be sure to set the right mood.

At the time of publication, the store link for the DeadShep statue was returning a 404 error.
