Developer of "Star Wars Outlaws" Says He Wants to Nail Han Solo's "Badass Fantasy

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Star Wars: Outlaws game director Mathias Karlson and scenario director Navid Khavari detailed the upcoming open-world Star Wars game They talked about Their impression of the new character Kay Vess is that he is an up-and-coming Han Solo-esque character who dives into the galactic underworld at one of the darkest points in the film's timeline.

In case you couldn't tell by Vess's swarthy space suit, quirky inhuman companions, and chunky junk spaceship, "Outlaws" is trying to be the bad guy game of Star Wars, just as "1313" (RIP) is the definitive film about a bounty hunter Just as "1313" (RIP) was supposed to be the definitive film about bounty hunters. "We were excited about this 'bad guy fantasy,'" Khavari told Gamespot." Considering the "bad guys" and what time period this film falls in between, "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" both involve civil wars that engulf the galaxy.

"We felt that entering the underworld within that window was the perfect starting point for someone like Kay and the players."

Kay, however, is a stark contrast to the former rugged nerf-herder in that she is new to the bad guy business; Khavari and Karlson describe her as a newcomer who has jumped into the thriving criminal underworld of Star Wars. In Kay's case, the direction is not yet set. Kay has not yet left her mark on the galaxy, nor does she know anything about the syndicate or the criminal underworld. And as a character, her self-deprecating, "I don't know yet" attitude is, frankly, very refreshing. It's fun to write."

"Kay is also a bit of a loner," Carlson added. 'She's someone who grew up in an environment where she had to do everything herself, where she had to survive on her own. And Nix (her fluffy animal friend that she can use to distract or sabotage her enemies) is almost like a chink in her armor. They are her only family. They are her rock. And I think what's great is that it carries over from the story to the gameplay."

Whether Massive can successfully land Outlaws, we'll see for ourselves in the coming year; PCG staff writer Morgan Park thinks Outlaws is the best Ubisoft has done in years. He hopes that the world's meticulous detail and characterization will live up to its massive scale.
