Enjoy OLED anytime, anywhere with this portable monitor!

OLED screens rock. This is a peer-reviewed, double-blind, placebo-controlled fact. Well, sort of. Anyway, if you want to add OLED goodness to any PC, portable or desktop, get the new Ricoh Portable Monitor.

It's basically a 15.6-inch OLED panel that connects via USB-C and comes in both a wireless battery-powered Ricoh Portable Monitor 150BW and a traditional wired Ricoh Portable Monitor 150. The price is $575 for the basic model and $736 for the upgraded version with battery and Wi-Fi connectivity.

In both cases, the panels are 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, 60 Hz, 300 nits peak, and both models support multi-touch and stylus input. It is unclear whether this brightness is full-screen or windowed. Likewise, it is also unclear what OLED panel technology is used.

Are there RGB sub-pixels? Are there any anti-burnout measures? The camera comes with a 3-year warranty, but Ricoh does not specifically mention whether or not that warranty is in place. [Instead, it says, "Due to the characteristics of OLED, there is a possibility that afterimages may remain if still images or still text are displayed for an extended period of time. This product is not intended for continuous use beyond 20 hours. Use in excess of the continuous operation time specification may shorten the life of the unit."

Anyway, the wireless model supports Miracast and has a battery life of 2.5 hours. In other words, they are designed for occasional wireless use rather than all-day use. However, the fact that it supports Miracast means that it can be connected to both a laptop and a cell phone at the same time and jump between the two devices.

Of course, with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, this panel is not optimized for gaming. We would also like to know how bright it actually is and whether the burn-in is properly covered.

But we don't have to worry about whether it is actually better! In fact, we do care if it is good. But it might be a good one; it's a bit pricey for a 15.6" 1080p panel, but it's quite interesting.
