21-Year-Old CS:GO Pro Dies Defending Ukraine

Ostap 'Oni' Onistrat, a Ukrainian counterstrike pro player, died fighting for Ukraine, which is still at war with Russia. He was 21 years old. According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Onistrat was killed by enemy shrapnel on June 3 on the front lines in Vuhredar, Donetsk Oblast. This is a region where the conflict is currently particularly intense, with Ukrainian forces fighting to retake Russian-occupied territory.

Onistrat last competed in Counter-Strike: according to Sportskeeda, his last competition was the 2021 ZUEL Championship, where he competed as part of Ukrainian team Libertatem and finished as runner-up.

"When 21-year-old Ostap Onistrat joined the Ukrainian army to defend his homeland, his father Andrei, a well-known Ukrainian banker, did not think twice. He wanted to protect his son, his heroic son, from the cruelty of war. ......" Two days earlier, Ostap's life was cut short by enemy shrapnel. Another Ukrainian father lost his son. Ukraine has lost a son. It is an irreparable loss. Victory is inevitable. We all owe Ostap our lives."

"A young Ukrainian CS player died protecting [Ukraine] and each of us," said Sergey Bezhanov, CS:GO coach for Ukrainian team Monte Esports. 'Glory to our hero! Only 21 years old."

Onistrat was a drone pilot in the 68th Jaeger Brigade. According to the latest Reuters estimates on the war, 62,295 people have been killed, 60,000 wounded, at least 15,000 missing, and some 17 million displaced. Ukraine has now launched a multi-pronged counter-offensive against the Russian occupying forces, with no end in sight to the conflict.

"I am sorting through Ostap's belongings," wrote Andrei Onistrat, Ostap Onistrat's father. 'Various sensations. Ouch. I bought him many things. He asked me some things. These are all memories. Now they are too heavy to lift. Pride.
