Longtime Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter is a man of many talents, having written and acted in film, video games, and television since the early 90s. He is someone who has been in these industries long enough to know what it takes to make a sausage and is not the least bit impressed with AI.
"People who steal your voice should be locked up forever, but I have a different point of view," Hayter told Eurogamer in a new interview. He went on to say that he came up with the idea for the film and, just for fun, asked ChatGPT to write a script to see what would come out: "the worst, cliched, soulless, dumbest collection of words I've ever seen."
Ah, but Hayter is just starting to warm up. As for voice AI, "the technology to copy our voices is amazing," Hayter says. For example, if you Google "deep fake voice, Biden duplicate," you'll find a lot of crazy stuff being said. But when you listen to it, it's not soulful. It's obviously just a processed version of his voice."
I have to agree with him on this point. Don't judge me, but I saw a YouTube video where Biden, Obama, and Trump's AI ranked a game of Resident Evil. It sounds like Obama, but I instinctively know it's not Obama. Something is missing, inflection is off, pitch is wrong, whatever it is. If I remember correctly, Obama was against Reg 4 being on the top team.
"If you think you can get thousands of subtle, emotional adjustments that (versatile voice actress) Jennifer Hale can deliver verbatim, you're kidding yourself," Hayter says. 'Yes, legally, we should all be protected from the idiots who try to recycle our voices for free. But technically, I'm not terribly worried. [AI advocates talk about how much AI will change the world, while trying to reassure governments that AI will never be like Skynet. But it is already clear that certain dire predictions about the emergence of AI, such as writers and voice actors losing their jobs soon, for example, are completely pictorial compared to what these technologies can produce today." The term "soulless" fits the technology of today and may well continue to do so in the future.
