At 1:18 p.m. EST, Blizzard announced that the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack affecting Battle.net has ended; according to Kotaku, Blizzard first acknowledged the attack on Twitter at 10:24 a.m. EST, warned players in-game, but according to a post on the Diablo subreddit, the game was experiencing serious problems as early as last night.
Late yesterday, posts began appearing on the Diablo subreddit questioning the game's server status, with posts from users Humdot, Angry-Gargoyle, and feiergiant all complaining of what appeared to be unannounced server down times, MustaKotka noted that Diablo 2 Resurrected is also suffering from connection issues, while a post on the Overwatch subreddit by MageWithoutMP indicates that Overwatch 2 is similarly affected.
It is unclear who was behind the attacks or why they were stopped. Blizzard's announcement that "the DDoS attack we were monitoring has ended" makes it sound like the attackers stopped of their own volition; DDoS attacks use a network of infected devices to overwhelm a server, and can be used against a variety of targets, from individual users to large online services. It can be a weapon against targets. The timing of the attack, over the weekend, appears to have been intended to affect the largest number of Battle.net users.
The live, always-online nature of Diablo 4 meant that players had little recourse but to wait for the attack. This resulted in a markedly different experience from the original game.
