Joseph Staten, longtime Bungie writer and creative lead on "Halo Infinite," left Microsoft (open in new tab) earlier this month: to Netflix.
"There is nothing I love more in my professional life than working with others to build a world full of iconic characters, deep mystery, and endless adventure," Staten tweeted.
"So today I'm excited to announce that as Creative Director of Netflix Games, I'm joining a brand new AAA multi-platform game and original IP. Let's go!"Staten has had a long and varied career in the "Halo" series, from voice work on "Halo 2" to writing director on "Halo: Reach" to, as mentioned, creative director on "Halo Infinite." He left Bungie in 2013 He then moved to Microsoft, where he served as creative director on a number of games, including "Sunset Overdrive," "Quantum Break," "Crackdown 3," and "Microsoft Flight Simulator."
When Netflix entered game development in 2021, its focus was primarily on mobile game development (open in new tab). But in November 2022, the company said it wanted to create a "triple-A PC game (opens in new tab)," which appeared to be a live-service shooter. Staten, it is fair to say, is adept at orchestrating that kind of project.
Netflix, unfortunately, refused to comment further on what Staten will be starting: a rep directed me to Staten's LinkedIn (opens in new tab) page to describe his new role, which he said on Twitter I just repeated exactly what he said on Twitter. For now, we'll just have to wait and see.
