It's a strange announcement for a video game. Techland is still working on an update to Dying Light 2 and has yet to reveal plans for a third game, but they are already trying to publicly gauge who people want to play in this currently nonexistent sequel. In other words, Dying Light 3. It will probably happen at some point, and fans seem to want to play as the reformed villain.

Eurogamer (opens in new tab) discovered that "Dying Light" franchise director Tymon Smektała took to Twitter (opens in new tab) to conduct a poll exploring who fans want to play the "main hero" First, however, he clarified that "this is not a Dying Light 3 announcement"; Smektała said the team had discussed the subject while finishing the "Gut Feeling" update for "Dying Light 2" but could not agree.

The choices were Survivor, Pilgrim, Nightrunner, and GRE Agent turned good guy; nearly 6,000 people voted for their favorite choice, and voting was closed because the GRE Agent received a significant number of votes; 42.8% voted for this choice, whereas we had a "Gut Feeling" of "GRE Agent." Dying Light 2," another Pilgrim played in Dying Light 2, 4% voted for the other Pilgrim.

Of all the choices, the GRE agent is the only one that I associate with "bad guys becoming good guys" because it immediately establishes tension and conflict, even though it is still fairly common. Frankly, I still prefer the bastard GRE agent. Villains are always more fun.

It will be a while before we hear anything concrete about Dying Light 3, but in the meantime the "Gut Feeling" update is coming to Dying Light 2 tomorrow. Expect combat changes, gear transmog, and quests to be added. The cynic in me suspects that the timing of this update and the announcement of Dying Light 3 was to coincide with the arrival of Dead Island 2, which will be released on April 21. Obviously Dying Light's closest competitor, but I don't think the studio has anything to worry about; a review of Dead Island 2 (opens in new tab) described it as "boring" and "repetitive" and gave it a score of 55.
