According to recent benchmarks of AMD's Radeon 780M iGPU (the exact same integrated graphics as the RDNA 3 graphics in ROG Ally's custom Ryzen 7 7840U SoC (open in new tab)), Red Team's next-generation mobile chip, It appears to be capable of playing Cyberpunk 2077 and other games at 1080p at 60fps. At least when overclocked.
What ROG Ally means is still vague, but if the custom SoC's iGPU is anything close to the one tested here, Asus' next gaming handheld will be very promising.
These numbers are from YouTuber ETA Prime's (open in new tab) use of the Asus TUF A15 and its Ryzen 9 7940HS Zen 4 APU (via WCCFTech (open in new tab)), which we expect to see in the ROG Ally While not the CPU we are most interested in, the Radeon 780M integrated graphics is the most interesting part of the ROG Ally; Asus has been teasing the ROG Ally since April Fool's Day (opens in new tab), and the latest rumor is that its custom SoC is between the Ryzen 7 7840U and the Ryzen 5 7640U
The latest rumors suggest that the custom SoC will be positioned between Ryzen 7 7840U and Ryzen 5 7640U.
To be clear, TUF's Ryzen 9 7940HS was originally supposed to have a base clock of 3 GHz, but AMD lowered it to 2.8 GHz. This is close to what we expect from the ROG Ally to keep it handheld friendly, although the SoC of the ROG Ally is custom-specific, so there could be some differences in performance.
It is also important to consider the possibility of thermal throttling, as the Ally packs a lot into a much smaller chassis.
Still, if the ETA Prime benchmark is anything to go by, the 45W iGPU sits below the performance of Nvidia's mobile RTX 2050 and above the Radeon 680M iGPU.
With all games set to 1080p, GTA V ran at an average of 81 fps at very high graphics settings, while Forza Horizon recorded 86 fps. Forza Horizon recorded 86 fps: Zero Dawn in performance mode 69 fps.
Not the most intense graphics test, CS:GO also boasted 100 fps at high graphics settings. And Doom also performed well, with Doom Eternal averaging 83 fps at medium settings.
With integrated graphics like this, who needs discrete graphics?
The CPU was overclocked to its original 3 GHz on Cyberpunk 2077, so we may not see ROG ally hit the same average 65 fps on medium settings, but it is a nice try.
Overall, not bad results, giving us a good feel for ROG Ally's performance potential, and we're not sure if we'll be able to see the same average of 65 fps on the medium settings, but it's a nice try, and we'll see if we can get the same average of 65 fps on the medium settings.
According to a recent tweet from Asus, ROG Ally is coming sooner than expected (opens in new tab). Whether it's weeks or months away remains to be seen, but if you're looking for an alternative to the Windows-powered Steam Deck (opens in new tab), now is the time to start saving.
