I miss the days of adventure books. As a kid, I used to have a book full of traps, horrors, and treasures, written by something of a wizard. You basically had to memorize the whole thing beforehand in order to leave any chance of getting out alive, which was pretty terrible by all accounts, but I still have fond memories of it.

You can imagine my delight when Arkane's latest little marketing push before the release of "Redfall" next month is a self-selecting browser game set in the protagonist's town, "Take Back Redfall" (opens in a new tab ) is free to play right now on Bethesda's site, and puts you in the role of Layla Ellison, one of the four protagonists of "Redfall," on a quest to defeat the Night Manager, a vampire who was at the end of the line when the sinister villain's title was handed out.

It's fairly short and easy, but not a bad way to kill five minutes and gives us another insight into Arkane's next project. As you might expect from a browser game, you'll spend a lot of time in "Redfall" looking for ways to avoid head-on collisions with the enemy.

It would have been cool if the browser game had the option to choose from multiple protagonists. Perhaps someone else would have been a little better at running in guns blazing. Layla seems to struggle in scenarios where she can't creep around or levitate, which is at least relatable.

Redfall launches on May 2, less than a month away, and as an avid fan of Dishonored and Prey, I'm hopeful that Arkane will pull it off, but PCG's hands-on with Redfall (open in new tab) last month Robin Valentine was less than impressed. He said, "Redfall feels quiet and empty on its own."
