Eitaka Miyazaki, president of FromSoftware, creator of Dark Souls, and the man who never reads comments (opens in new tab), has scored another title, according to Famitsu (opens in new tab): He is the second game developer to be ranked in Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People of the Year" (new tab He is the second game developer to be included in Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People of the Year" (opens in new tab). Along with Joe Biden, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, and Mr. Beast (opens in new tab), Miyazaki is the first game developer to make the list since Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto in 2007.

Not all of the individuals on the list will be well-known (albeit notably influential). His entry was written by Neil Druckman, co-president of Naughty Dog and co-creator of The Last of Us.

"When I first played Eitaka Miyazaki's game, I was miserable," Druckman wrote. But as he learned to slow down a bit, "suddenly it hit me."

"As I progressed through the game, I became more deliberate and careful about how I explored this world. And in return, the world rewarded me with tension, beauty, and wonder." [These are emotions that passive media like television can never reproduce."

This last statement may be of some concern to those working with Drachman on the TV show "The Last of Us," but I can't disagree. No TV show has given me more elation than when I overcame Altria in the "Dark Souls" DLC, and no TV show has made me sigh and turn off my computer to sleep after being killed 14 times in a row.

Miyazaki has yet to react to Time putting him on the list alongside those responsible for the second largest nuclear arsenal on the planet, but he must be pleased. The game he has led is one of the most important in the past 15 or so years. If that's not influence, I don't know what is.
