Bing's AI image generator allows artists to "restrict" access to their work, but not block it completely.

Bing's AI image generator allows artists to "restrict" access to their work, but not block it completely.

Microsoft Bing offers its own AI image generator based on Dall E, but it appears to offer little protection to artists against copyright infringement other than promising to restrict access to their work if they file a complaint.

I found an ad for Bing Image Creator in my Windows 11 search bar this morning. It knows I'm playing Jurassic World Evolution 2 (opens in a new tab) and is urging me to generate a "unique dinosaur image."

But wait a minute, this wording is a bit odd. Unique dinosaur images... Of course, a non-unique dinosaur image is just an image of someone else's dinosaur, because it's just an image of someone else's dinosaur.

That would be a plagiarized image.

The Bing Image Creator FAQ (opens in new tab) details how Microsoft is "committed to responsible AI," but the artist protection statement seems almost an afterthought. Regarding Microsoft's response to plagiarism, there is only the following sentence.

It does not elaborate on where the referenced images are sourced from, but it is assumed that they are scrapings from Bing's image search.

However, Bing strictly enforces explicit content and introduces every possible way to prevent exploitative or grotesque images from being generated.

However, the community is not satisfied with the strictness of these regulations.

One recent Reddit post by user ClinicalIllusionist (opens in new tab) states, "Just got access to Bing's Image Creator and already got banned for trying to generate an image of 'an excited Redditor trying Bing's new Image Creator' and already got banned for trying to It appeared. It doesn't seem too risqué to me, but I suppose it depends on whether the generator represents an "excited Redditor" or not.

User x246ab also wrote: "I could not get this generator to make a single image, authentically. I literally ran "American Flag" and it was like "Nah we need someone to review this."

At least we can say that Bing is cracking down on the improper use of its generator.
