Final Fantasy 14" Distributes Second Expansion Content for Free

Stormblood may not be Final Fantasy 14's best expansion, but it's certainly the cheapest right now. Square Enix is currently (open in new tab) giving away the MMO's second major expansion for free.

If you are taking advantage of the game's free trial (the base game and the fantastic first expansion, "Heavensward"), then you can't claim it. You must have the base game and a paid subscription to take advantage of this deal. On the plus side.

I said that "Stormblood" is not the best expansion, but that comes from being sandwiched between two perfect expansions, which is a bit unfair. Still, it's an incredibly solid experience that includes some of my favorite dungeons and trials in the entire game. Final Fantasy 12 fans will enjoy the Ivalice 24-player raid, and the optional Four Lords quest line is packed with great boss fights. Two DPS classes are also available: the wizard Red Mage and the melee combat Samurai.

While the storyline falls pretty flat for many players, it's still fun to actually play the expansion; Steven gave it a 92 in his Stormblood review (opens in new tab), writing, "The uplifting story of rebellion and outstanding boss battles are exquisite by MMO standards. Not only is it exquisite by MMO standards, but it rivals the best-loved Final Fantasy games."

The promotion runs from now until May 8, just long enough to continue taking advantage of the free trial and get Stormblood as a little bonus before jumping into the paid version. If you've fallen off the Final Fantasy 14 wagon and want to get back on, Square Enix is running a free login campaign at the same time. If you have a paid account and haven't logged in for more than 30 days, you can return to Eorzea for free.
