General
This new Steam game turns Tetris into a dungeon crawler, which is pretty cool.

Despite being nearly 40 years old, Tetris has never gone out of style. People will never get tired of the game in which they frantically pile up blocks falling from the sky. Tetris has just become the star of a sexy movie (opens in new tab) called "Tetris."

So it's not a bad idea to play a new game on Steam that oddly turns Tetris into a dungeon crawler. Developer SquareAnon's "Blocky Dungeon" (opens in a new tab) uses Tetris-shaped pieces (called tetrominos, by the way) to build dungeon segments. The player then controls a brave knight, moving him around the dungeon, fighting monsters and earning gold coins. [The knight is controlled with WASD in the left hand, and the dungeon blocks are controlled with JIKL in the right hand. However, because blocks must be dropped to replenish the knight's action points, the game moves back and forth between dungeon construction and adventurer movement.

Like Tetris, one must avoid filling the entire map with dungeon blocks or the game will be over. use the Ctrl key to select a section of the dungeon, and if you step outside of that section, the monster standing on top of it will disappear as well. If you do so, you will disappear from the line, along with any monsters that were standing on that line. The remaining blocks that were stacked on top of that line will collapse to fill the empty space.

Another annoying thing is that the knight is cursed, and if you kill the monster not by hacking it to death, but by dropping it off the map while clearing the line, the knight's curse meter will fill up and start damaging him. Therefore, only a few monsters can be skillfully killed in this way before their own strength begins to be depleted. It's a clever way to get him to weigh the risk of fighting monsters one-on-one against the risk of using the map against them.

Different levels have different goals to complete, such as winning while limiting yourself to a certain number of steps or defeating a certain amount of monsters. There is also an endless mode where you play as long as you can, and the longer you play, the tougher the enemies become. Collecting hammers from crates allows you to break dungeon walls and create your own dungeon squares, which can help you fill in small gaps and escape from dangerous situations.

You can also power up monsters by defeating them with a "perfect strike" (dealing the same amount of damage as the monster's remaining HP). You can also spend gold to unlock new characters like Vikings. Since it is a dungeon crawler, there are bosses to fight as well as grunts.

It's a really clever concept, and I like the jam-packed, cartoonish art style. Even after just a few minutes of playing, I came across several other surprises, such as spiky traps that pop up and fall down with each turn, square wooden floors that can collapse, and blocks that change shape as you move. In addition, we saw two monsters next to each other and a bit of a smackdown until one of them died. Thanks for the assist!

With over 30 different enemies to fight, a handful of bosses, and several different game modes to try, Blocky Dungeon (opens in a new tab) was just released on Steam this morning and can be had for $10 or $8 if purchased before April 13.
