Sons of the Forest (opens in new tab) continues its evolution from uncompromising horror survival game to playable meme generator with the latest patch, with this discoverable vehicle named Knight V (pronounced "Knight Five"), players can speed around the game's vast cannibal island like a greyhound with worms. Why there are motorized unicycles on a savage island full of cannibals is another question, but video games never allow logic (open in new tab) to get in the way of fun.
The new features added in patch 03 are not the only highly impractical means of transportation. Players can also find night vision goggles in the wilderness to help them navigate at night without attracting attention from local cannibals. Meanwhile, the crafting system has also been expanded, adding solar panels, light bulbs, and electrical wiring.
In addition to these additions, patch 03 includes a much wider range of balancing, system changes, and smaller additions. In fact, the changelog is very worth reading. The adjustments range from the mundane, such as "improved basic attack logic for some enemies," to the disturbing, such as "it is now easier to dismember dead characters with melee attacks," to the obviously disturbing, such as "dead babies are now buoyant underwater.
Well, there is a lot to be said.
Now, a game that features both an electric unicycle and a floating baby corpse is something to think about. The original game was fairly consistent in its horror theme, treating its world and its inhabitants almost seriously. As a result, the more twisted horror moments were more effective.
By comparison, Sons of the Forest has shifted more and more toward a silly, meme-baiting sandbox that only moonlights as horror. That's all well and good, but I wonder if such a game needs to include things like "puffy corpses" and realistically floating baby corpses. Fiction or not, people tend to take the idea of infant death quite seriously, and it may not be a wise creative choice to include such ideas along with being able to zing around in a vehicle that looks like it was made for clowns.
Well, I'll put my soapbox away now; you can read the full list of additions and tweaks from the latest patch for Sons of the Forest here (opens in a new tab). The game is currently in (fairly rapid) Early Access development, with rough plans for a full launch in 6-8 months.
