General
The next season of "Call of Duty" may actually make everyone happy.

Call of Duty is about to get its biggest update since Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 were released last year, and Activision is giving a full rundown of next week's Season 3 update, which will appear in CoD's 6v6 and Battle Royale sections, with new The company revealed it in a massive blog post (opens in new tab) detailing maps, guns, modes, and features.

This is the plural of "maps" referring to traditional multiplayer, with a total of three 6v6 maps and two large "battle maps" that are arrangements of Warzone maps.

Both sides of the community seem to be quite well-served this time around, which leads me to believe that this will be the first CoD update in a while that will make everyone happy (or at least less angry than usual). Here are the most relevant details of the Season 3 update, which will be available on April 12:

Modern Warfare 2

Battle Royale

DMZ

Of course, there are new battle passes, but Activison is trying something a little different this time They're trying something new: Called Blackcell, this new $30 version of the Battle Pass includes the Blackcell Operator, a black/gold suit and mask combo that has become increasingly popular as a shooter aesthetic in recent years.

The bundle claims to be worth roughly $70, but it is better to think of it as a regular $20 cosmetic bundle that also comes with a premium battle pass. Not a bad deal if you're super into the John Wick/Edgelord aesthetic and already intend to get the pass; it's laughable that in 2023 a digital cosmetic product for about half the price of a new video game would be considered a bargain, but that's the way we are.

Interestingly, Season 3 will also introduce official Discord integration for the PC versions of MW2 and Warzone 2. What exactly that will look like is unclear, but my guess is that a simple in-game menu to access the Discord server will eliminate the need to rely on alt-tab and hotkeys. More details on this will be in next week's patch notes.

I hope Call of Duty avoids how 2017's Lawbreakers (RIP) used Discord. That game was partnered with a chat app as the official voice chat solution, so in order to join a match voice chat, you were constantly kicked off the server you were already on. That was not great.
