Steam version of "The Last of Us" finally gets its first big patch, but there are still concerns

The first real patch for The Last of Us Part 1, available on Steam (opens in new tab), has been released. As is typical with these types of updates, the initial results seem to be mixed. Some players say the update has dramatically improved their games, while others are suffering from slow performance and crashes.

"Patch 1.0.2 addresses several crashes, improves performance in several areas, and fixes several gameplay and UI issues including several animation, texture, and lighting bugs," developer Naughty Dog It stated. The company added, "We continue to monitor and investigate player reports and will keep you updated on future improvements and patches, including a fix for mouse jitter."

because, unfortunately, the "jitter" issue is not addressed in this patch. Naughty Dog said earlier this week that it had intended to address the issue in a hotfix, but had to delay the fix because it caused "unexpected issues" elsewhere. The Last of Us Part 1's list of known issues includes "hardware and display settings Some players experience mouse and camera jitter" remains "depending on the hardware and display settings.

The patch promises to improve texture streaming to reduce CPU usage, which was another major issue for players. (On a positive note, thanks to Eyebrows Joel (opens in new tab) for providing this (opens in new tab).) Steam's AxelStu (opens in new tab), for example, reports that "CPU and decompression stuttering is gone!" but many users do not. [Sadly, my 5600X/3080 12Gb setup shows no improvement; the 5600X is banged up and rarely gets below 90% utilization.

"The update has made the game very bad. The last time I played the game was in a college building the other day, and when I tried to boot it up today after the big update, the ground textures were gone. And the vram usage in the graphics menu is even more broken than before." I honestly wish I could roll back the update to what it was before. The game worked much better for me and was relatively bug free on my PC, except for one bug in the intro."

Another user, mackzett (opens in new tab), reports that after installing the patch, there was no change until he rebooted. After installing the patch, be sure to reboot.

The bottom line is that this patch aims to be much more of an improvement than a hotfix, but you may have different tastes. If you are already comfortable with The Last of Us Part 1, you may want to forgo this update.
