Memory and storage prices are almost the only things that are dropping in the tech world. You don't see graphics card makers shoving each other to reduce the price of an RTX 4070 Ti and then a week later offering another hefty discount. But that is exactly what is happening in SSD town.
We have already covered the excellent Nextorage 2TB SSD dropping to $160 (open in new tab). That's the best price we've seen so far for the fastest PCIe 4.0 drive.
However, it is not the cheapest 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. That honor goes to the Crucial P3 Plus at only $113 (open in new tab), but the WD Black SN770 at only $120 (open in new tab) is a bit faster and would probably be our drive of choice if $7 were an issue. WD's drive is the best in its SSD pace. Not the last word, but it's still the fastest chunk of SSD storage, exceeding 5,000 MB/sec on reads and falling just short of that on writes.
It's funny that the best SSDs (open in new tab) have such a huge price drop at a time when everything else is getting more and more expensive. If you don't have at least 1 TB of fast storage in your PC at this point, I don't know what else to tell you.
The WD Black SN770 is available in 1TB trim for only $70 (opens in new tab).
If you only use motherboards and PCs with PCIe 3.0 slots, the good news is that PCIe 4.0 drives can run at speeds comparable to previous-generation SSDs. And if you choose to upgrade, you can take that drive with you and get even higher performance. It's a win-win.
