The 2022 (opens in new tab) roguelike game is unlikely to get a sequel anytime soon, and in a chat with GameSpot (opens in new tab), Vampire Survivors creator Luca Galante would remain "unlikely" unless some way is devised to "offer something radically new" about the game.
Galante has not given up on "Vampire Survivors" entirely. He is indifferent to a sequel because he feels that the current game provides a good foundation for developing it." The design of "Vampire Survivors" allows the existing game to offer both new content and new game mechanics. The same is true for "Spiritual Successors." Galante seems to be putting all his energy into the games he has already created.
It's somewhat amusing that Galante isn't interested in making his own, which makes sense, considering that after this game went viral last year, there were tons of Vampire Survivors clones (open in new tab) available. If Galante can do everything he wants to do with the platform he already has, why would he let it dry up while he produces sequels on a platform that attracts a rabid fan base for new content?
It reminds me of the developers of Among Us, who cancelled their planned sequel (opens in new tab) during a pandemic. There is not much reason to ruin a good thing. So, until Galante comes up with something "radically new", he will stick with his current DLC plan for the game. It seems to be working: the game's first DLC, Legacy of the Moonspell, currently has a 96% favorable rating on Steam based on over 1500 reviews.
Moreover, the game's fans are as enthusiastic as ever, and despite overseeing the largest corporate acquisition in gaming history, even Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has found more than 10 days of free time to play 100% of the game in its current state (in a new tab Open).
