Wo Long Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, released today, could have used a little more time in the oven. Frame drops, stuttering, and shader issues are common performance problems with PC ports of the last couple of years. Players playing this game with keyboard and mouse have reported some truly puzzling design choices regarding Wo Long's controls.
You don't have to go far to find players complaining of technical problems. As of this writing, only 31% of Wo Long's 2,331 Steam user reviews (open in new tab) are positive, and most of the negative ones mention the game's performance: AloneInSilence (open in new tab). One user review sums it up, calling the game "unplayable" due to "constant stuttering, periodic freezes, and occasional crashes" that occur "during gameplay, cut scenes, and even while navigating menus. These problems also occur in the game's demo (video below) and appear to be the same in the full game.
On Reddit, a user called Individual-Error5651 (open in new tab) complains that the Game Pass version of "Wo Long" is inexplicably fixed to 720p on RTX 3060 and still somehow only runs 10-15 frames per second .
But for every lament over Wo Long's technical problems, there is a user who is frustrated by the keyboard-and-mouse controlled game: a user named cashews (opens in new tab) calls Wo Long "the biggest PC porting disaster I've ever seen under Calling it a "buried good game," he points out the game's technical problems, but declares that "the biggest problem is the controls.
"If you don't move the mouse fast enough, the camera doesn't respond regardless of mouse sensitivity," Cashews said, believing that Wo Long's developers have imported the dead zone of the gamepad's analog stick into the game's mouse-based controls. "The key layout is a total joke as well," Cashews said, "Deflect/Dodge is bound to Tab by default, which is a bit of a joke.
"I played for less than an hour with mouse and keyboard," said a reviewer called T.E.S. (open in new tab), but the slowness of the mouse-operated camera made them "sick" and forced them to put the game down.
To be fair to Wo Long, the gamepad will always have an advantage over a reliable old keyboard and mouse setup when it comes to games such as Souls, which has a lot of action, but even by their standards Wo Long's keyboard controls It seems bad. Some players have reported success in reconfiguring the layout, but there is only so much that can be done in the face of the aforementioned problems with the game's camera.
Just a couple of weeks ago, we complained that PC players were sick and tired of one crap game after another being ported to the PC (opens in new tab), and it seems that Wo Long is another example to add to that pile. It's a shame, because the game itself is pretty great, except for the performance and control issues (a fact pointed out in many negative reviews). Sam Greer was very positive about the game in our "Wo Long" review: in his review of Fallen Dynasty (opens in new tab), he praised it as "very complete" except for "technical blemishes."
Hopefully, the game will be patched ASAP, but it would be much, much better if companies would stop releasing games in this state in the first place.
