Here at PC Gamer, we review a number of peripherals and hardware designed to enhance PC gaming. Peripherals in particular have come a long way since the early days. Countless brands have pushed their own ideas, which is why it's odd that most peripherals are still offered in the same boring mix of colors and styles. Those who want more colorful accessories often have to resort to RGB lighting, but sometimes thematic releases get our backs.
A perfect example of this is the Destiny 2 Lightfall SteelSeries collection (opens in new tab); as a non-Destiny 2 player, I was taken aback by this beautiful peripheral set. The gradient is covered in white, detailed swirls. The design is inspired by the giant city of Neomuna on the planet Neptune in Destiny 2. It doesn't make much sense to me, but I still want these very badly.
The SteelSeries series includes a headset, mouse, and RGB-lit mousepad, all of which match this glorious theme. For controller players, KontrolFreek (opens in new tab) also offers a thumbstick, but it looks a little less cool. They come in solid purple and light green, with the Destiny logo embossed on the surface.
The headset featured in this collection is the Arctis 7+ Destiny 2: Lightfall Edition (opens in new tab), which looks great in this theme. The lower part of the headset is a peachy-gold hue, which turns purple by the time you get to the upper band. It would also be a nice headset without the color.
The 7+ is the next step up from the SteelSeries Arctis 7, which we called the headset to beat when it was released a few years ago; the Lightfall Arctis 7+ has the same MSRP of $200 as the regular model.
For the mouse, SteelSeries did the honor of including the Aerox 5 wireless (opens in new tab). I reviewed the SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless mouse (opens in new tab) last November and found it to be a great lightweight all-rounder. The cut-out diamond design makes for a very light mouse that really helps you aim for headshots. My only complaints are the forward side buttons and the battery communication issues with the SteelSeries GG app.
At $160, this mouse is about $10 more than the regular Aerox 5 MSRP; the Aerox 5 is available on the SteelSeries site for $90, so if you're not as attracted to this color scheme as I am, that might be a smarter choice!
The Aerox 5 is a very nice mouse.
To make sliding this mouse easier, SteelSeries also offers a QCK PRISM XL (opens in new tab) powered RGB mouse mat with Lightfall styling. I'm not a big fan of mouse mats. That said, this may be the nicest one I've seen.
SteelSeries has been offering RGB-lit mousemats for years, but this is clearly the coolest yet: I want it; at USD70, this is $10 more than the regular variant, but it seems well worth the upgrade.
As a celebration of the release of the "Destiny 2: Lightfall" expansion, this gear also includes an in-game reward: if you buy anything from the Lightfall series, you get the Luminescent Precision emblem. The headset, mouse, and mousepad come with the Viral Celebration emote as an added bonus.
Unfortunately, these are not currently available for purchase in Australia, so we can only look at them from afar and sigh loudly. These peripherals are great and I hope they sell a million units and bring more color to gaming technology. Maybe this will offset the lackluster reception of the "Lightfall" expansion.
