'Dead by Daylight' is inevitably a horror film

"Dead by Daylight" is a game that wouldn't be complete without a horror movie. Everything about the game, from the scenarios and visuals to the jarring sound effects, derives from a long lineage of schlock horror stories about silly teenagers exploring basement noises, and that feeling was exacerbated by a long post-launch DLC list that added various movie villains to the game's killer roster made it even worse. And now it has reached its logical conclusion: a "Dead by Daylight" movie adaptation.

Developer Behaviour Interactive is working with Atomic Monster and horror specialist Blumhouse to launch the film (Variety (open in new tab), thanks).

James Wan, CEO of Atomic Monster and director of "The Conjuring" and "Insidious," has called "Dead by Daylight" a "love letter to the world of horror," which is accurate enough, as "the terrifyingly intuitive world" is "perfect for the cinematic adaptation of horror," he said. Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, is the producer of "Get Out" and "The Purge."

Even without the licensing tie-in, there is clearly a lot going on. The press release mentions three of the game's original killers (Nurse, Lace, and Hug), and I would bet big that the freaky Nurse will be the main antagonist. The game's basic setup (four survivors trapped in a killer-infested environment) is already a pretty straightforward B-movie.

The project currently has no director or screenwriter attached, but is being produced by Wang, Blum, and Stephen Malrooney of Behaviour Interactive. Apart from this project, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse plan to merge this year. The news comes shortly after Blumhouse announced a new label, Blumhouse Games, which will publish "original horror-themed games" (opens in new tab) with budgets under $10 million.
