Kai Cenat has become the new King of Twitch, surpassing 300,000 registered users in a month-long submarathon in February, surpassing former title holder Ludwig. "This has been an amazing journey ...... Happy Black History Month," he tweeted.
Twitch confirmed Cenat's accomplishment on February 28, announcing that he had officially become "the most subscribed channel in Twitch history." Ludwig's record of 283,000 channel subscribers (open in new tab) has stood since April 2021, and the big cheese before that was none other than Ninja, who in 2018 had over 269,000 channel subscribers.
By all accounts, it was a very close call. Senat surpassed 250,000 (open in new tab) on February 26, 260,000 (open in new tab) on February 27, and 270,000 (open in new tab) on February 28; at 7:15 p.m. ET on February 28, he announced that he had surpassed 300,000 (open in new tab) on announced on Twitter.
Cenat began his streaming career on YouTube over a decade ago, but only transitioned to live streaming on Twitch in early 2021; according to Kotaku (opens in new tab), he is a "Just Chatting" main, but has also been a "Just Chatting" member of Minecraft," "GTA5," "FIFA 23," and "Sons of the Forest," as well as game streaming. He has over 80,000 channel subscribers in 2022 (open in new tab), surpassing Felix "xQc" Lengyel to become Twitch's most subscribed English-speaking channel Twitch did not mention this and received no response from Cenat to the platform's which led to mild but sharp criticism of the platform.
"People on Twitch, watch what's happening. 'People of color like me haven't been recognized for years. I don't want my community to go unrecognized, Twitch, I have no problem with you. I have never seen anyone from my community on the front page of your platform."
Cenat recently caused controversy in January when content creator Jovi Pena said she was raped by a friend of Cenat's at a party to which Cenat invited her. In a response video (opens in new tab), Cenat said that he gave Pena the name of the accused man after the allegations were brought up, but that he was not involved because otherwise the matter was handled by the police.
