It was only a matter of time before AMD and Nvidia addressed the days of bad drivers, and on the same day both companies announced new releases that alleviate the problem for both Radeon and GeForce GPUs; one is an actual fix, while the other is just an embedded workaround that was announced earlier.
Nvidia's new 531.26 GeForce Hotfix driver is dedicated to ridding users of a nasty bug that causes the Nvidia Container software to consume more than its fair share of CPU resources when exiting games.
The double GPU driver issue (open in new tab) was only reported a couple of days ago, so it didn't take the Green Team long to address it. The previous workaround was simply to roll back to the previous driver or terminate the Nvidia container task in Task Manager, which to be fair was not onerous. Since updating my system, I have not noticed any unusual CPU usage at all.
This is a light touch driver update with only a few caveats:
GeForce hotfix display driver version 531.26 is based on the latest Game Ready driver 531.18 (open in new tab).
This hotfix addresses the following issues:
On the other side of the GPU department is AMD, which is not necessarily the Red Team's fault, but potentially a much more critical driver bug.
This is where Windows gets bullish about updating software, and if you try to run some update process while the Radeon Adrenalin software is also being updated, it will completely corrupt your Windows installation. This is a rare problem.
Not good. The workaround is much less straightforward than the Nvidia bug and requires the use of a system restore point to get the OS back up and running. However, this is easier said than done, and it is reported that in order to force the automatic recovery process to run, the power button must be pressed for the required picoseconds between BIOS options and Windows attempting to boot.
However, there are precautions that can be taken to prevent this from happening during an update. This will essentially prevent the software from doing a clean install of the GPU drivers, as the latest version of Adrenalin, version 23.3.1, is now compatible with the Wo Long release and Halo Infinity release: the Fallen Dynasty release and Halo Infinite's ray tracing update, both of which are temporarily disabled anyway, from the latest version of Adrenalin, version 23.3.1 (opens in a new tab).
This should prevent the ultra-rare but painfully destructive bug from occurring again.
