General
FML, "Starfield" will be released one week after "Baldur's Gate 3".

Starfield (opens in new tab) finally has an official release date: September 6. The bad news for RPG fans (and probably for Larian Studios as well) is that this date means that the long-awaited and much anticipated Baldur's Gate 3 ( opens in a new tab) is set for release on August 31, just one week away.

This poses a dilemma for gamers. Can you play a full-fledged Larian RPG in a week? Not enough time at all.

This leads smoothly and easily to the next question: do we really want to launch a game on the scale of Baldur'sGate and put it on hold for the weeks or months spent on Starfield? Because let's consider the situation again, frankly and dispassionately: after spending months floundering around in Starfield, can you really remember what the hell you were doing in the middle of Chapter 2 of BG3?

Of course, Baldur's Gate 3 is not the only problem. Pinocchio's soul-like Lies of P (opens in new tab) will also be released in August - no specific date has been set at this time, but the month is set - and the gorgeous retro RPG Sea of Stars (opens in new tab). While the degree of tough choices may not be the same for many gamers due to its appeal to a more niche genre, the timing may be bad news for the game itself: it is a foregone conclusion that "Starfield" will be a huge hit and will be released around the same time smaller games could be steamrolled.

It is possible that some studios will try to dodge that bullet with a strategic postponement. It would not be unprecedented: 2020, major updates to Everspace 2 (open in new tab), The Medium (open in new tab), MechWarrior 5 (open in new tab), Path of Exile (open in new tab), etc, Several planned releases were all postponed to avoid "Cyberpunk 2077". But that's a risk for developers, too: September is still six months away, plenty of time for things to go wrong. Call me a pessimist, but I'm not alone:

The June 11 Starfield Direct live stream will give us a closer look at Starfield, which Todd Howard said will "dig deep into the game." Until then, here are some lesser-known Starfield details (opens in new tab).
