Discord has long made it official policy not to listen to or record (open in new tab) video calls, voice chats, or live streams. This week, Discord announced an update to its privacy policy, replacing a line that clearly outlines its no-listening policy, and users were concerned that this no longer applies.

The new policy, which goes into effect on March 27 (opens in new tab), outlines exactly what Discord collects and stores, which is described as "any content you upload to the service." This includes custom emojis, shared files, voice messages, and writing; while it is no longer explicitly stated that Discord does not listen to or record voice or video chats, a Discord representative told PC Gamer that this practice has not changed.

"Our position on recording user content has not changed. In the updated policy, we have clarified old language that may be confusing given some upcoming product enhancements and releases.

"However, Discord does not store or record user content without the user's knowledge.

This is reassuring, but I'm not sure what Discord got out of recording my friend playing Overwatch for four hours. Interestingly, the updated policy mentions a feature that, as far as I can tell, is currently not possible on Discord: "Create a short recording of GoLive activity." Perhaps the ability to create short stream highlights, similar to Twitch's one-minute clip feature, is one of the "future product enhancements" that Discord is preparing.

In a pretty big week for the Internet's largest chat app, Discord announced new AI tools (opens in new tab) that integrate directly into its servers, including Clyde, a ChatGPT-powered bot that will roll out on select servers starting next week. The marriage of PlayStation and Discord (opens in new tab) was also officially announced this week, with Discord voice chat finally coming to consoles for all users.
