Atomic Heart, an FPS with a fridge full of lust, was released without any FOV controls in the options menu. The usual wailing and gnashing of teeth ensued, and when Atomic Heart mods appeared, the custom FOV slider mod quickly became the most popular, downloaded over 19,000 times. For comparison, even the NSFW Nude Twins mod (open in new tab) has only been downloaded 5,800 times so far.
As of the latest patch, that FOV mod is no longer needed. (We leave it up to each reader to decide if a nude mod is needed). Patch 1.3.4.0 adds FOV settings and ultrawide fixes and disables mouse acceleration. The patch notes (open in new tab) are more detailed and can be read below.
The developers promise that further updates are on the way and will include additional UI and subtitle resizing options, and a remap of controller inputs. Steam Deck support is also planned.
The game is controversial because it is a Russian-made game that explicitly deals with Russian history and ethnic identity. In his review of Atomic Heart, Rich Stanton wrote, "While the game takes a nostalgic look back to the days when Russia led the space race and the names of its cosmonauts were all over the world, it also takes a nostalgic look at what the system was like and how its principles are still used to subjugate its people under the guise of comradeship It is a clear-eyed look at what is being done," he writes. Again and again the names of great Russians appear in supporting roles, and they are used to speak to the broader theme of excesses and, by extension, man's inhumanity to man. It is hard to imagine that after this game, Russia will seem as if it were a wonderland governed by wise people for the common good."
Below are the full patch notes for version 1.3.4.0, which includes various bug fixes as well as graphical and sound improvements.
