Sons of the Forest Patch Fixes NPC's Chaotic Behavior, but Many Players Liked Him: 'I Hated Kelvin'

Learning things and getting smarter is usually a delight, but in the case of Kelvin, the flunky from everyone's favorite Sons of the Forest (opens in new tab), it has the opposite effect: a recent patch has made Kelvin's brain bigger, and some players are not happy about it.

Lauren Morton recently declared Kelvin "the new best boy in video games (opens in new tab)" thanks to his adorable blend of energetic diligence, childlike friendliness, and, well, still underdeveloped problem-solving skills.

"Kelvin is not a dog. He is not a toddler," Lauren wrote of her best digital companion.

"But my friends and I have cheered each of his little tricks as if he were one. He runs in small, fast-paced little steps. He throws exactly what is requested, exactly where he is told (what a smart kid). He smiles a silly, happy smile and look at his fishing skills."

But the first patch for Sons of the Forest smoothed out those charming rough edges. From the patch notes (opens in new tab):

Each is a relatively minor point, even an obvious improvement. I mean, what if you told Kelvin you needed a log and he ran off and chopped down the tree you just built your treehouse on: ....... What the hell is wrong with you, Kelvin?

But as GamesRadar (opens in new tab) noticed, quite a few "Sons of the Forest" players on Reddit (opens in new tab) are not happy with the upgrade. They liked Kelvin, the slightly brusque but deeply affectionate boy who goes for everything, but now that he's better ...... he is not so good anymore.

Others in reply (open in new tab) share similar thoughts:

I can understand that reaction. In a way, Kelvin reminds me of my dog (opens in new tab): loyal and loving, somewhat less gifted with brains. I would make her "smarter" if I could" I certainly sometimes wish she were a little brighter. But there is something undeniably endearing about a big girl who gives it her all, even if she doesn't know what's going on around her. Kelvin is not a dog, as Lauren said, but he definitely has a similar chaotic energy.

The good news for fans is that Kelvin may be a little less dangerous to those around him than before, but there is still plenty of lovable nuisance potential left.

"Players need not worry, as there are still plenty of ways for Kerbin to destroy the base. We will continue to add to Kelvin's abilities throughout the Early Access period and hope he continues to experience a world of convenience and fun."
