Reddit is down (update: appears to be back up)

Update: As of 4:30 PM PDT, the majority of Reddit appears to be functional again. (Some features are still inaccessible.) The reason for the downtime has not been stated.

"We are implementing fixes and slowly getting things back up and running again," Reddit said shortly after 3 p.m. PDT (opens in new tab).

Here's the original: No, it's not your imagination: Reddit, the "front page of the Internet" (opens in new tab), is down.

I noticed this problem while doing research (i.e., looking at memes) for another article on The Last of Us. In the middle of this, the site suddenly stopped loading: no errors, just a blank page.

After several frustrating reloads, I went to redditstatus.com (opens in new tab). The desktop and mobile versions are particularly affected, with the mobile app showing a less severe "partial outage"; Downdetector (open in new tab) likewise shows some major problems, with nearly 60,000 users nearly 60,000 users have reported the problem.

At 12:56 p.m. PT, Reddit announced that it had "identified an internal system issue" and is currently working on a fix. We will keep a close eye on the situation and will update information about what went wrong as soon as we are back online.
