Techland is developing a new fantasy RPG? No, me neither! Probably because it was announced at the same time as Dying Light 2 (open in new tab), which was announced literally seven years ago (open in new tab). But perhaps the company is ready to focus on the game it has been warming up to for the past nearly a decade.
In a tweet posted yesterday, Techland gave us a few valuable snippets of information about what this RPG will be all about. Not much information, folks, but at least we know that Techland is aiming for a "story-driven" game set in an "exotic open world."
So we know that Techland is on the right track. Because Techland has clearly mastered Shenanigansen's first rule of good worldbuilding (open in new tab), The Elder Scrolls (with its incredibly cool secret third moon (open in new tab) rumored to be the corpse of the dead god Lorkhaj) worked wonders, so one can imagine that the shattered planetoid that remains in the sky in Techland's concept art will work well for this studio as well.
The tweet states that the unnamed game will combine and refine "the best aspects of gameplay that Techland excels at. To me, this sounds like the kind of first-person adventure we can expect from Dying Light. Especially since the image clearly shows a dwarf doing tree parkour. mid-2022, Techland's CEO said (opens in new tab) that they were working on "a completely new IP, very different from what we've been doing for the past few years," which is not exactly the wording of this tweet. Not consistent.
Techland was already working on this game a year before it was announced in 2016, so there was a lot of time to figure out what the heck it would be. At the time of the announcement, they stated that they wanted to implement both cooperative and single-player gameplay. However, much time has passed since then. Techland did not say when we would hear more, so we'll see you back here in 2030.
