General
This fixed camera survival horror mod is like a teleporter accident between Half-Life and Resident Evil.

On March 9, modder SellFace released Lost and Damned (opens in new tab), a single-player mod for Half-Life 2's venerable Source engine. It's a cheeky and fun homage to Resident Evil, mixing up the two games to the point of whiplash (in a good way). [SellFace nails the flash-cut perspective shifts of the old Resident Evil, changing the way you see the scene drastically as you move around the room. The tank controls are also implemented quite well, all mapped to the keyboard and mouse.

SellFace achieves this truly jaw-dropping effect by combining stock Half-Life 2 assets with crazy effective Resident Evil details. The inventory screen is perfect, just sending the classic Resident Evil six slots full of PS1 core buzzing and bleed-through sound effects, but with the health vials, the sound effects of picking up a health vial in the base Half-Life 2 are still played. Of course, there's the classic Resi door-opening zoom-in, but then comes the mundane photo-textured HL2 door that I've grown accustomed to over the past 19 years, as "Lost and Damned" pokes at two different nostalgic lizard parts of my brain at the same time, Definitely enjoyable.

I didn't get particularly far in this mod, but it gets down to business fairly quickly. The first few rounds were easy, but once I saw multiple zombies on the screen, my day was ruined. I ran into a side room and picked up a vial of health, but it triggered my jump scare and a nasty zombie jumped out and manhandled me at close range.

Lost and Damned is available on MODDB (opens in a new tab), install the Source SDK (I tried to get it beforehand, but Steam will do it on its own if you try to run the mod without installing it), and in the Properties menu, under Beta tab and need to set it to "upcoming"; drop the file into steamapps/sourcemods, restart the client, and Lost and Damned will be waiting for you in the library.
