Meta's popular VR headset, Quest 2 (opens in new tab), has been the most affordable option for those looking to get started in VR since its launch in 2020. The headset, which can be connected to a powerful gaming PC or used standalone without wires, is offered at a fraction of the price of many competing products. This remains largely the case today, despite Meta's recent price increase of $100 for the Quest 2 (open in new tab). However, Meta is currently offering the 256GB model of the Quest 2 for $US70 less (opens in new tab).
VR and AR headsets will proliferate in 2023 (opens in new tab) and may break the Quest 2's stronghold on VR value, but US $430/AU$720 is still a reasonable discount compared to the current MSRP of US $500/AU$790. 2020 gold. While not quite up there with the price, it's a good enough discount in today's market. Also, given that Meta plans to end support for older models (open in new tab) this year, this may be a great time for original Quest owners to upgrade.
The current deal includes all the usual kit that comes with a standard Quest 2 headset. This includes the charging cable, power adapter, both controllers with batteries, the MegaNespacer, and of course the headset itself, as well as the GOLF+ and Space Pirate Trainer DX VR games that can be redeemed at Meta's Oculus Quest Store. also bundled. Both of these games are simple but fun experiences, perfect for first-timers, and work well with the standalone Quest 2.
The strap that comes with Quest 2 is functional and consists of a Velcro strap around the skull. Most people who use it even semi-regularly will want something a little more comfortable and sturdy. For an additional fee, you can opt for Meta's Elite strap option at checkout. It's miles better than the original strap, but there are better options that don't have to be Meta-branded.
My boss, Jacob Ridley, liked the improved comfort offered by the official Elite Strap (opens in new tab), but it is not the best alternative strap I have personally tried. Since he is currently sleeping due to time zone constraints, I'll gently let you know of a much better alternative I think.
I currently use the BOBOVR M2 Battery Pack Head Strap from Amazon (opens in new tab). It is bulkier, but the fit is far superior. The design takes the weight and pressure of wearing the headset off my sinuses and redistributes it with some pretty impressive padding. Even with a sinus headache, I was able to wear this headset with little discomfort.
According to Meta's current roadmap (open in new tab), Quest 3 should see the light of day later this year, but at a higher price than the undiscounted Quest 2. While the future looks bright for the new headset, this may be the best Quest 2 deal in a while. Between this and the HTC Quest rival, the Vive XR Elite (open in new tab), which is also slated to be over $1,000, and is close to the price point of the Quest Pro, which is not Meta's gaming headset, there is no reason to think the Quest 2 will soon be cheaper than this sale price .
