"Deus Ex", there is a reason it is still talked about after all these years. I love you Adam Jensen and am sorry that your girlfriend experimented on you and gave you a robotic arm. As an example, streamer StickmanSham (opens in new tab) shared on Twitter (opens in new tab) the utterly ludicrous details of the simulationist.
As is customary, Stickman was fiddling with some metal boxes to get past the trip wires of the security lasers outside Smuggler's lair. This arms dealer's home security turns 21st century super cop JC Denton into Swiss cheese.
While fiddling with physical objects to make way, Stickman tosses a full garbage bag out of the way and throws it near a nearby drum fire (only in New York!). . The trash touches the drum and burns up, which is fun as a systemic interaction, but the really crazy part is what happens next.
Seconds after it burns, the trash disintegrates haphazardly, and scraps of paper and other debris drift away. You would think that this piece of paper is just a sprite or a collisionless model, but it's not; it's actually an object in the world that can trip the security beam that Stickman was struggling to avoid. The machine gun pops online and JCD (password: bionic man) leaves the world of the living.
It's always good to be reminded of Deus Ex's legendary attention to detail, but I'm simply amazed that this game still continues to amaze me. I first played it more than a decade ago, and never noticed or even mentioned that this little piece of garbage had a tripwire working! As for Deus Ex, a feature on its iconic opening level (opens in a new tab) will be published in 2020.
