Uh oh! Gamers in an uproar over Final Fantasy 16 Squeeze Hole

A 19-second clip of "Final Fantasy 16" was released today. But poor Torgal is overshadowed, and instead, attention is focused on something more controversial. Rather than focusing on our furry friend, players are interested in only one thing: that squeeze hole.

For God's sake, don't Google it. I'll just tell you what it means. Apparently, at some point in the recent past, "squeeze hole" became the accepted name for when you have to go through a gap in a video game that conveniently obscures the loading screen. I am quite unhappy with these terms, but this is the world we have created and now we must live in it.

Anyway, you would think that these days it would not need to be said at all. I am convinced that the whole point of this generation of consoles is that they finally have fast SSDs and no longer have to cover the long loading times that were necessary with the spinning platter drives of the PS4 and Xbox One.

But apparently not! Because despite FF16 being a PS5 exclusive (never mind when Square Enix announced the game for PC (open in new tab)), the game remains a squeeze hole. Fans are both perplexed and annoyed: for one thing, they don't know why this mechanic is still in the current console game, and for another, they are mystified as to why Square Enix would center it in a public teaser about a dog. [But a quick look at the many quoted retweets (open in new tab) reveals people expressing their displeasure and their outrage over it." This is a next-gen exclusive title, so why is it still slipping through the cracks!" user JustJDog09 (opens in new tab) exclaimed, while someone claiming to be Supesz (opens in new tab) begged the developer to "bring back the loading screen." even Digital Foundry's John Linneman (opens in new tab), a Square Enix has stated that it makes no sense to show official clips with squeeze holes. At least in the comments on Reddit (opens in new tab), the background music seems to be more impressive.

Some users have noted that squeeze holes in games may be a choice, not a necessity. Square Enix has previously stated that FF16 will not be a completely open world (open in new tab), and the shimmy points may just be a design trick to prevent players from doubling back as they progress through the levels. It could also mean that the narrow cracks in the walls are so easily concealed that it takes Togal's keen senses to spot them. Or maybe someone at Square Enix just wanted me to spend an hour writing the word "squeeze hole" repeatedly. The possibilities are endless.

Final Fantasy 16 and its squeeze hole will be released on PS5 this June 22. No word yet on when it will be released on PC after this deal expires, but it surely won't be too long, no matter how much antics Square Enix pulls.
