High on Life" creator Justin Roland's domestic violence charges dropped due to "insufficient evidence".

The domestic violence lawsuit against Justin Roiland, creator of "Rick and Morty," has been dropped, Polygon (opens in new tab) reports.Roiland, who also created the 2022 Game Pass hit "High on Life" (opens in new tab) was charged with felony counts of domestic violence and false imprisonment after criminal charges were filed in May 2020, but these charges did not come to light until they were unearthed by NBC News this January (opens in new tab).

A spokesperson for the Orange Country District Attorney told PC Gamer that the DA's office "dismissed the charges yesterday because there was insufficient evidence to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt."

In a tweet titled "Justice" (opens in new tab), Rolando wrote that he "never doubted this day would come" and that he was "grateful" for the dismissal of the case, but that he was "deeply shaken by the terrible lies reported about me in this process," and that he was "deeply upset that they would bypass due process and try to 'undo' me. I am disappointed that so many people were so quick to judge without knowing the facts based solely on the word of an outraged ex-lover who wanted to 'annul' the case."

Rolando was arrested in August 2020, three months after the May criminal complaint, and later released on a $50,000 bail bond. He pleaded not guilty in October of the same year.

In a tweet, Rolando stated that he was "determined to move forward and focus on both my creative projects and restoring my reputation." After the accusations came to light, Roland was dropped from Rick and Morty (open in new tab) by Adult Swim and resigned from High On Life studio Squanch Games, which he co-founded at the same time. It is currently unclear whether the dismissal of the charges against Rolando will affect his involvement (or lack thereof) with these two companies.

We have contacted both Adult Swim and Squanch about this matter and will update if we hear back.

In a statement to Variety (opens in new tab), Rolando's attorney said he commends the Orange County Attorney's Office. He stated, "We are grateful that justice prevailed.
