The Last of Us" PC port is terrible, but the bugs are great

The PC port of The Last of Us Part 1 is not good (open in new tab). In fact, it sucks. The shader lag is terrible, the random crashes are terrible, and the Steam reviews are all real angry. It's a scattered situation for a game that represents Sony, and yet another in a long line of tiredly shitty PC ports (opens in new tab). [Because, after reading through the clips and screenshots everyone is sharing online, I think TLOU PC might be one of the best absurdist comedies of our time. I mean, look at this:

What would have happened if the PC version of TLOU hadn't been plunged backwards into the platform and caught fire, or if Joel had dressed up as Bogdan from "Breaking Bad" (open in new tab)?

Hair, in particular, seems to be the problem with the game at the moment. Joel's eyebrows, Tess's waxy hair (opens in new tab), and Joel's daughter's desperate and tragic attempt to cover up her premature hair loss with dry pasta are all running around in dire need of showers in this post-apocalyptic game.

I think my favorite bug I've seen is the one that makes everyone drench. What causes this is beyond me, but the quirks of the code have created the most thoroughly soaked cast in video game history. This made the entire game seem to unfold in 50-degree heat, an example of climate fiction (opens in new tab).

In the online "The Last of Us" community, especially in the TLOU subreddit (opens in new tab), people have shared other bugs about Tess' character that were unexplained in the PS5 version, like the fact that Tess can levitate (opens in new tab). For now, you can just sit back and meditate on the game's messages for the minute and a half it takes to build the shaders.

After all, as a player going by LemonZitroneCitroen (opens in new tab) said, the game's ported state may be what sets the whole thing apart. The world of The Last of Us is harsh and unforgiving, its people suffering. We, the players, are in this cruel world and must suffer along with the characters: ...... We PC players are the spirit of The Last of Us."
