Naughty Dog Investigates PC Performance Decline in The Last of Us

Update: Naughty Dog has since released a hotfix (opens in new tab) to address performance issues.

Original Story Experienced PC gamers are accustomed to dealing with the wonderful world of extremely buggy ports. Sometimes it's an infuriating, game-destroying problem, but more often it's just dumb or annoying. The PC port of Naughty Dog's blockbuster hit "The Last of Us," which excited fans so much when it was announced last year (opens in new tab), apparently offered just as many bugs of both kinds (opens in new tab). This has left many fans upset with the experience, but the good news is that Naughty Dog is aware of many common problems and is already investigating.

On its official PC support page (opens in new tab), Naughty Dog lists known issues with the PC version of The Last of Us Part 1. They range from shader issues (which probably just result in weird visuals) to problems with the game not launching at all. The post is accompanied by a promise that all of these bugs are being investigated and addressed, and will be addressed in a future patch.

The first two issues on the list both refer to shading, with one focusing on load times and the other on stability and performance. We ourselves have encountered many shader issues with this game, leading us to brand it yet another bad PC port. (Opens in new tab) It is not uncommon to encounter such problems with shader compilation in modern PC games, but depending on the degree of impact on the system, the game can become completely unplayable.

Problems with older graphics drivers have also been cited as a cause of stability issues and graphics errors. Hopefully, most people will upgrade their drivers and these problems will go away, but there are many people running older cards that should be able to handle the PC requirements (open in new tab) there even at low settings. This problem may be exacerbated by shader issues as well, so hopefully these issues will be fixed ASAP.

Another system requirement issue is that the game cannot be started even though it meets or exceeds the minimum requirements. Unless this problem is fixed, poor gamers will not even be able to see Joel's fabulous eyebrows (opens in new tab) with their own eyes.

Memory leaks are also listed as a potential known problem, suggesting that something is causing serious RAM spikes. Memory leaks are not that uncommon a bug in newly released games, and they recently terrorized players of "Hogwarts Legacy" (open in new tab) as well.

Rounding out the list are mouse and camera jitter issues, which seem to depend on hardware and display settings. This could be related to the other issues listed above, or it could be a new problem in and of itself. Regardless of how many problems there are, we hope that Naughty Dog will soon release a patch that fixes as many of them as possible.

Although the game has only been out for a few days, these issues have already caused a lot of backlash from fans who were hoping for something better from the port. Nothing comes close to this level of problems, especially considering that Sony has had reasonable success with ports of games like "Marvel's Spider-Man" (open in new tab) and "Returnal" (open in new tab).
