Apple's mixed reality headset should be unveiled at WWDC in June, but you know it will be quite expensive.

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil its highly anticipated mixed reality headset at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5 at its Cupertino, California campus. This will be the latest product Apple has announced since the Apple Watch in 2015.

Bloomberg (opens in new tab) reports that the headset, rumored to be called Reality Pro, will be a major focus of Apple's event, with the headset and its xrOS operating system to be revealed. The Apple headset will feature inside-out tracking with special hand-eye controls, VR Facetime, and AR/VR versions of Apple's core apps.

The headset will likely feature a portable battery that fits in a pocket to save weight.

Like Apple's new product, the headset is rumored to carry a premium price of $3,000. It will feature a number of external cameras and two high-resolution screens, but details regarding the exact specifications are largely speculative.

Incidentally, our pick for the best VR headset (opens in new tab) is the Meta Quest 2 (opens in new tab), which is inexpensive at $349. Even the most expensive gaming headset, the HTC Vive Pro 2 (opens in new tab), costs about $1,400, which is roughly half the price of Apple's new headset.

Apple is said to be working on a less expensive headset named Reality One, but details are sparse. Apple is heavily focused on AR and VR, and its biggest competitor, Meta, just announced another massive layoff (opens in new tab).

We first heard about the mixed reality headset when news broke that it was releasing more consumer-oriented AR glasses (opens in new tab).

Price has always been the biggest barrier to entry for VR and AR headsets. We recently reviewed Sony's impressive PS VR2 headset (opens in new tab), but our biggest complaint is that so far it doesn't have games comparable to PC and is quite expensive.

So, at $3,000, Apple will need quite a bit of convincing to sell the headset. Recently, the New York Times (opens in new tab) reported that some Apple employees are not so happy with the new headset, calling it "a solution to a problem."
