Naughty Dog Apologizes to "The Last of Us" Players on PC

The Steam user rating (opens in new tab) for Naughty Dog's prestigious third-person narrative game "The Last of Us Part 1" is currently "Mixed" with only 43% of user reviews giving it "thumbs up". Negative user reviews include "garbage that stutters hot even on low settings" and "as broken as my house". In a word, ouch.

"We know some of you are not experiencing the Naughty Dog quality you were expecting," begins the developer's Twitter thread (opens in new tab) for The Last of Us Part 1 PC players." Our team is working hard to resolve the issues that are currently preventing some from experiencing the game in order to ensure that you reach the level of quality you expect and deserve.

"A hotfix for the PC version of The Last of Us Part I is scheduled for Tuesday that will address the mouse-controlled camera movement jitters, some crashes, and more. An even larger patch of fixes will be available later in the week. We also encourage players to use the latest Nvidia, AMD, and Intel graphics drivers. Our team and our dedicated partners at Iron Galaxy will continue to investigate and address known issues to provide the great The Last of Us Part I experience you have come to expect.

The PC port was originally scheduled for release on March 3, but was pushed back to March 28, partly due to the popularity of HBO's film adaptation, which has been lit up. Naughty Dog said at the time that it wanted to make the best of The Last of Us Part 1's PC debut. These next few weeks will ensure that this version of The Last of Us will live up to your and our standards."

The release date for The Last of Us Part 1 was postponed from March 28, 2011 to March 28, 2012.

Fast forward to release week, and many players found that the game was not up to their standards. Some reported crashes and slow performance, while others encountered bugs such as floating NPCs, wispy hair, strange eyebrows on the main character Joel, and characters suddenly getting soaking wet in the middle of cutscenes.

I'm one of those annoying guys who mostly "works fine for me," and so far I haven't encountered Joel with the eyebrows or the inexplicable wetness. But still, it crashed at the menu the first time I started it up, and the frame rate is constantly hovering between 130+ and mid-50s, despite waiting for the shaders to finish compiling before starting to play. One Steam user described it as "when it works, it works perfectly, but when it crashes, it crashes 150 times in a row."

This is particularly upsetting to many because "The Last of Us" has a reputation for being one of the best video game experiences and one of the games you have to play to be part of the conversation around the medium of video games. Those who have been lucky or far beyond the system requirements of "The Last of Us Part 1" and have been able to play it without any problems seem to be impressed. Favorable user reviews include, "Great game and story. Better played on MnK than controller." and "First time I played it and was underwhelmed. Honestly one of my top 3 favorite games of all time."

The positive reviews are numerous.

The latest hotfix brings The Last of Us Part 1 to version 1.0.1.6, and the patch notes (opens in new tab) explain that "the team is closely watching player reports to support future improvements and patches." The patch "addresses fixes to improve memory, performance," and some other details are provided below.

Naughty Dog's list of known issues (opens in new tab) notes that players experiencing problems not resolved by the latest patch should submit a ticket to the support site (opens in new tab). You can also choose whether or not you want Sony to collect all the data you are playing from the menu, but to add insult to injury, the unaltered in-game text states that this will "help us build the best PlayStation experience possible!"

It states.
