Indie development studio Landfall has released a large collection of unfinished and unreleased game prototypes from years of development, including an unreleased version of Totally Accurate Battle Simulator (opens in new tab) dating back to 2017.Landfall has over the past few years made a name for itself with games such as Clustertruck (opens in new tab) and Totally Accurate Battlegrounds (opens in new tab), in addition to TABS.
The collection includes "all the projects Landfall and friends have worked on since 2016 that didn't make it to the shelves but deserve to see the light of day," the developers say. From physics-based puzzles and architecture games to disturbing horror and highly conceptual RTSs, it's a remarkable little collection filled with weird stuff to try and experiment with.
"Hack into the Landfall Archives to steal and play unreleased games, demos, interactive slideshows, and even an unreleased version of 2017's Totally Accurate Battle Simulator!" and the developer is announcing the release here.
Highlights for me were Robots Forever 1 & 2, a game about shooting off bits of modular robots, and Post game, a game about building a conveyor belt factory to move cargo. There were also two iterations of a game about building modular airships, and a truly brilliant and exciting prototype about building and controlling your own walking castle.
Elsewhere, the Blob Game caught my attention. Here is its description: "A small experience where you are locked in a room with an unknown creature and a voice speaks to you. The game has several different endings.
And then there's Wrecktangels, a local PvP shooter." In this simple side-view battle game, players jump and shoot each other while using the time-slow mechanic. The world is made up of objects that crumble and fall apart when you bump into them, keeping players on their toes. Definitely one of the short and sweet experiences of goofy fun.
Landfall Archives is available for free on Steam (opens in a new tab).
Elaborate April Fool's jokes have become something of an annual Landfall tradition, with several joke DLCs and games having been released on April 1 in the past; in 2020, the optional "Totally Accurate Battle Simulator" Bugs" DLC was released; in 2021, a 1vs1 rogue light shooter called "Rounds" was released; in 2022, the hilarious "Knightfall": A Daring Journey, a game about knight racing that includes horse drifting. Yes, that sounds cool.
