A month ago, we learned that "Cities: Skylines 2" was in the works (opens in new tab) at Cities: Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive and would be released later this year.
Since then, we've been looking for clues about the functionality of the city builder sequel in the achievements list (which tells us about rats, hailstorms, and 150 buildable map tiles (opens in new tab)), and announcing Easter eggs that seem to hint at Cities: Skylines 2 trailer: I also looked through the announcement trailer (open in new tab) for any Easter eggs that might suggest that Cities: Skylines 2 might be made with Unreal Engine 5.
Today, Colossal Order provided us with some new information about Cities: Skylines 2 on Twitter: including a denial of the Unreal rumor. ) that Cities: Skylines 2 will be made in Unity, like its predecessor, and not in Unreal 5.
The developer also answered several other questions, including that Steam Workshop mods and assets will be used in the original Cities: Cities: Skylines is a whole new game: Cities: Skylines II is a whole new game. Skylines II is a whole new game. Existing workshop content will need to be reworked or adapted Cities: Skylines II is a whole new game: we will tell you more about Cities: Skylines II modifications in the future."
And finally, about the burning question many players have in an era when single-player games often include some kind of multiplayer feature or cooperative mode: are there any plans to add a multiplayer mode to Cities Skylines 2? The Colossal Order answers: "[Cities Skylines II] is our most ambitious project to date, expanding on every mechanic in the franchise. Supporting multiplayer would require a tremendous amount of time and resources, and would take away from the core player experience we are trying to build.
So basically no. In most cases. Without actually saying no, it's as close to no as you can get, so of course one wonders why they didn't just say no.
One cannot entirely blame the Colossal Order for not being 100% concise in their answers. The questioner asked, "Will there be multiplayer in Cities: Cities: Skylines 2? They said, "Is there room to add multiplayer?"
But "little" means "never," which is probably a good thing: remember that 10 years ago, after EA and Maxis spent time and resources on multiplayer, "SimCity" crashed and burned (open in new tab) Let's not forget: coincidentally, it left room for "Cities: Skylines" to rise two years later.
Cities: As for when more details about Cities: Skylines 2 will be revealed, Colossal Order tweeted, "We will have more to tell you about this game in the future. While that sounds vague, Skylines 2 is scheduled to launch in 2023, so we won't have to wait that long.
